Example of when to use Ecocycle Planning
Case Study
The Goodworks Agency is located in a smaller centre in Ontario and has a large rural catchment area. The region has a significant number of temporary and migrant seasonal workers. When the pandemic hit, the agency had to close down in-person services. They had done some online service provision in the past, but it was really only provided in a more reactive way, limited to the telephone and not planned much beyond that. They pivoted and started offering their peer 1-1 supports and some group services online. Realizing that online services was something that the agency needed to be thoughtful about regardless, going forward , the senior team decided to go through an Ecocycle Planning process to explore it. They started by looking at the 1-1 peer supports. The purpose of the peer program is to offer 1-1 support services in relevant and accessible ways that honour the value of sharing lived experience in terms of being a PHA. The Ecocycle Planning process allowed them to explore activities they were doing to implement online service provision and gain a deeper understanding of the stages of each activity and the required organizational response for maximum impact. The process and discussion has allowed them to identify that while they had many ideas about delivering innovative online programs, they had not had time to effectively create the conditions for successful development, nor invested the required time, resources or energy towards fully creating and developing the programs into strong, stable and sustainable programs.
As part of the Ecocycle Planning process, it has been identified that the group services they were offering online while more accessible for some clients, were not creating a comfortable space for full participation. An action plan has been developed and decisions made to begin investing in the peer program by doing some initial research and development and slowly phasing out other identified programs to create space and resources required.
